Robert Stirling Newall
Robert Stirling Newall was born in Scotland on 27th May 1812. He became involved in the production of wire rope and established a factory in Gateshead. Keen on astronomy he had a telescope at his home Ferndene, near Saltwell Park..see below.Full Story
He was twice Mayor of Gateshead. Died 21 April 1889

He donated the equipment to Cambridge University and it ended up in Greece. The name of Ferndene lives on in a street name
