This photograph shows Bridge Street in Gateshead before the erection of the Tyne Bridge. Bridge Street, along with Bottle Bank and the north end of the High Street, formed the main business and shopping area of Gateshead until the 1930s. The street led up into Gateshead from the Swing Bridge, joining with Bottle Bank and Church Street just below St. Mary's Church. The photograph shows the variety of businesses which lined the street including inns, boarding houses and clothing stores. Some of the street was demolished in the 1920s to make way for the Tyne Bridge approach roads and the rest was removed during the slum clearance programmes between 1930-1950.
