Title: 22-28 Rabbit Banks Road (Off High Level Road), Gateshead
Photographer: Frank & Sons

Gateshead Old Pictures Ref: GL001678
This area was named after the wildlife found
there. There used to be a farm here which was probably incorporated into
the railway works. In 1816 a handbill issued by Cuthbert Ellison, of
Hebburn Hall (Lord of the Manor of Gateshead) stated ‘All persons found
trespassing, in any of these grounds, called the rabbit banks with
dogs, guns, nets or other engines for the destruction of rabbits or
other game will be prosecuted to the utmost rigour of the law’.
