North Dene, with its 15 rooms, built by Richard Wellington Hodgson

in 1853 where he lived for 32 years until his death on 26 May 1885.

Richard, eldest son of Rev John Hodgson, inherited the quarries of Windy Nook and elsewhere from his grandfather Richard Kell.
He was Mayor of Gateshead in 1854 and then again in 1871
