The parallel steep streets were Catherine Street, Frederick Street, Edith Street, Wharton Street, Hood Street, Robert Street, Mary Street, Palmer Street, Dorney Street

Mr Leslie Berry, Gateshead Borough Architect on his village concept, where residents are separated from traffic, and mention is made of his planned St. Cuthbert's Village

St Cuthbert's Village was a failure. Built in 1970, it was demolished 25 years later. The above conventional, albeit, steep street could have been gutted inside and modernised for far less cost and a significantly better result. The Victorians built streets like this so that water would run away. Houses built across the hill, early on, often lead to water ingress...the houses damning the flow of water downhill. This, with modern drainage and building methods, is no longer a problem

Then

Now, the tall tower block remains but the lower storeyed blocks of flats and walkways replaced by modern private houses on conventional streets

This photo illustrates one of the things that was wrong...soul-less corridors and menacing walkways
